Friday night, Stephenville hosted Venus for homecoming in what was thought to be a close District 7-3A match-up. Stephenville proved all the doubters wrong in the first half alone. Venus came into the game undefeated, boasting one of the best defenses statistically in the state. Stephenville came in with stats in the back of their mind as they rolled 56-13 on a brisk fall night at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
Witt Westbrook, the Jacket’s running back, had his best game of the year running 147 yards on ten carries with touchdown runs of 53 and 47 yards. Quarterback Tyler Jones and running back Dylan White added another 29 yards on the ground as well. Probably the most impressive statistics of the night included Bryce Gunter hauling in four touchdown passes. The Texas State commit had touchdown catches of 6, 48, 29 and 7 yards on the night. Also, the Stephenville defense played almost flawlessly, giving up only 5 passing yards all night long.
With the victory, Stephenville clinches a playoff berth and at least a share of the 7-3A district title. Their last game of the regular season is next week at Hillsboro. With a win, the Yellow Jackets will claim the district 7-3a title.
