Tarleton Rec Center sets new record

By SheaLeigh Jones –

The Tarleton Recreation Sports Center has seen record-breaking attendance this spring semester.

Monday, Jan. 28, the Rec Center saw its highest recorded attendance at 1,765 swipes to enter the facility. This is the highest number since the spring of 2010 when the previous record was set at 1,702 swipes in a single day.

The weekly average of swipes per day has jumped in the past week from 959.71 swipes for the week of Jan. 21-27 to 1,031.57 swipes the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

Director Robert Nimmo attributes the jump in attendance to several factors. Attendance is always high at the beginning of the spring semester.

Also, Nimmo said the record-breaking day was the opening day for intramural basketball. The two-year requirement to live on campus has helped attendance at the Rec Center tremendously. He said the Rec Center is much more accessible when students live right next to it.

Nimmo said the Rec Center staff hopes to be able to make some new expansions to accommodate the high attendance. It has already been approved to install platforms for weightlifters, and this semester the Rec Center will hold its first badminton tournament.
