Tarleton students release updated campus crime map

By Rachel Peoples –

Concerned about crime on campus? Check out a new, comprehensive map of all the crimes reported to the Tarleton State University Police Department between Jan. 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.

The map, which can be found in the interactive content section at texannews.net, is an easy to use public service to the Tarleton community.  Each red dot on the map marks the location of where a crime or incident reported to Tarleton police occurred. Click on the dots to read about the type, address and date of what was reported.

The map includes 300 crimes, incidents and other pieces of information reported to police.

This is the first in a series of crime maps that Tarleton students in journalism and broadcasting classes will publish in 2013. They are working on a series of eight other maps that will locate violent crimes reported to law enforcement in the Cross Timbers region, which includes the counties Bosque, Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Hamilton, Hood, Palo Pinto and Somervell.

The project was a combined effort of the Advanced Reporting, Broadcast Journalism and Media Writing Classes.

The map was created by Rachel Peoples, editor of the Texan News Service’s Distributed Reporting Project, and is based on the daily crime log maintained by campus police. The database upon which the map is based was reported and built by Peoples, K’Leigh Bedingfield, Darryl Blair, Chelsea Bradley, Dallas Burch, Becca Burnett, Erica Calhoun, Breezey Clark, Tatianna Clemons, Ryan Cox, Nick Duvall, Ashley Ehler, Kendra Geer, Monet Gerald, Julie Gutierrez, Houston Hall, Terrell Harden, Nathan Henderson, Sarah Heard, Laura Jokel, Aimee Kanode, Megan Kramer, Laura Lay, Mark Mallory, Dominique Martin, Caleb McCaig, Emily Miller, Kate Murphy, Kemi Ogunbanwo, Kristy O’Keefe, Alex Parrott, Trevor Peele, A’Darius Pegues, Kelsey Pharr, Justin Rayside, McCoy Renfro, Kelley Rumsey, Heather Sims, Jasmine Sullivan, Robyn Tanter, Samantha Townsend, Ian Troub and Kiley Widmann.
