Texas man found guilty in wrongful conviction case

San Angelo, Texas (AP) – A West Texas jury has convicted a man for the murder of an Austin woman whose husband was wrongfully convicted of her slaying.

Jurors in San Angelo found Mark Alan Norwood guilty of capital murder Wednesday for the 1986 beating death of Christine Morton. She was attacked in her home.

Prosecutors say Norwood beat the woman to death. He was sentenced to life in prison, but is eligible for parole after 15 years.

Morton’s husband, Michael, was initially convicted in her death in 1987. But he was freed in 2011. He served nearly 25 years in prison before DNA evidence exonerated him and pointed to Norwood.

This wrongful conviction just goes to show the issue of false imprisonment in Texas Prisons. A lot of people that were prosecuted in the past were often found guilty even when the evidence wasn’t sufficient.

Loved ones often spend a long time searching for the wrongfully convicted prisoners after moves occur and they continue to fight for their freedom.

The 58-year-old Norwood also has been charged with capital murder in the 1988 death of Debra Masters Baker, who lived near the Morton’s.
