Students from the Tarleton Tartan Project donated face masks to residents at the Laurel Glen Assisted Living Facility in Stephenville on Wednesday Oct. 25, 2023.
The College of Business is dedicated to funding a student-run business, The Tartan Project, in hopes of promoting real-world experiences for students. The Tartan Project helps students understand entrepreneurship plus what it means to own and operate a successful business.
Students enrolled in Dr. Yi-Chia Wu’s Retailing course (MKTG 3317) went to the local assisted living facility where they received a tour, had the opportunity to meet residents and donated their products.
MKTG 3317 is a class primarily intended for students wanting a general knowledge of the retail environment and those who specialize in marketing.
This opportunity taught students the importance of community service and offered hands-on experience. Students were assigned to choose a local non-profit organization to donate to. Samantha Palacios is a student in the retailing course.
“We chose the assisted living facility because it is a good cause that helps our elders be their own person,” Palacios said. “This is a facility that cares for their tenants and is trained to help those with memory disorders such as dementia.”
Palacios said the experience taught the students important lessons and allowed them to show their determination to make a difference within the community.
“This experience taught us to give back to our community and raise awareness,” Palacios said. “It demonstrated our willingness to make a positive impact within the community and showcased our commitment to help others.”
In addition to the group that donated face masks to the assisted living facility, four other groups from Dr. Wu’s MKTG 3317 donated masks to local non-profit organizations. In total, 60 face masks were donated to the various organizations.
Thanks to the contribution from The Tarleton Tartan Project, residents at Laurel Glen Assisted Living Facility can stay safe while representing Tarleton in the purple plaid masks.
