Tarleton State University welcomed the class of 2029 to the Texan family Tuesday, Aug. 19, with the Convocation and Candle Lighting Ceremony.
The tradition was held in the brand-new EECU Center, being the first event to take place within its walls.
Consequently, a unique conclusion to the ceremony took place. As the procession began to exit, flashing stadium lights and AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” filled the center. The electric energy intensified as students took the towels from the back of their seats and spun them around in the air.
The incoming freshman class has continued Tarleton's pattern of growth. The group of 4,225 students set yet another record for new student enrollment.
During the Convocation, Tarleton President James Hurley addressed the crowd, sharing words of encouragement for the incoming class.
“I am proud and honored to welcome each and every one of you to Tarleton State University,” Hurley said. “Being a Texan is defined by students' commitment to learn, their resilience in the face of challenges and their pursuit of excellence.”
The Convocation and Candle Lighting Ceremony is a long-standing Tarleton tradition that signifies the beginning of a student’s journey. At the end of Transition Week, each new freshman and transfer student lights a candle and are officially welcomed to the Tarleton State family. Student Body President Lauren Rogers also spoke to the new students.
“Tonight, you will become part of a fellowship of thousands who have come before you,” Rogers said. “Your candle symbolizes the light to guide you on your journey at Tarleton State.”
Hurley delivered an important message to the incoming class, one that captured the purpose of the ceremony and the journey ahead.
“Now, with your Tarleton flame lit, please know that the gates are open for you – to pursue new ideas, new opportunities and new dreams as a Tarleton State Texan,” Hurley said.
