Every year on Oct. 31, kids and adults collectively dress up for Halloween. Whether kids are going trick-or-treating or adults are going to gatherings, the holiday is fun for everyone and widely celebrated.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated by the Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago according to History.com.

Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition that is celebrated Nov. 1 through Nov. 2, directly after Halloween, and is a celebration of life and death. Día de Muertos translates to “Day of the Dead,” a holiday where friends and family pay respects to those who have passed away.

This year, Tarleton State University students had a variety of ideas for costumes. Whether they are lone costumes, couples, trios or group costumes, every costume is unique.

When asked, quite a few Tarleton students said they were dressed up as some kind of Disney character. Two students said they are going to dress up as Rapunzel from the Disney movie “Rapunzel” and Ariel from the Disney movie “The Little Mermaid.”

One Tarleton couple said they are going to be Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from the Disney movie “Zootopia,” while another couple said they are going to be Belle and the prince version of the Beast from the Disney movie “Beauty and the Beast.”

While a lot of students are dressing individually, there are just as many students dressing up in trios or groups.

One trio said they are going to dress up as a trio of Ghost Faces, while another said they are going to dress up as Kiss, Marry, Kill. One student even said her friend group is going to be dressed as Teletubbies.

A lot of students know what they are going to wear; however, plenty of students do not know what they are going to dress up as at all or do not celebrate Halloween.

For any students who may not have any ideas, here are some fun costumes you or your friends can dress up as: Shrek, Fiona, the Grim Reaper, a butterfly, Pennywise, any food pullover, an inflatable animal, Vincent van Gogh, Jack Skellington, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Batman, Taylor Swift, a music band or a vampire.

Although dressing up for Halloween is fun, what you do for Halloween is also important. Some things you can do for Halloween are attend a Halloween party/gathering, eat out with your friends or have a Halloween movie night.

Sophomore Genavieve Ward recalls what her Halloween was like last year.

“Last year, a group of friends and I went walking around the neighborhood and got candy,” Ward said. “Even if we didn’t dress up, it was still a good experience.”

While Halloween can be a fun night full of trick-or-treating, photo shoots, haunted houses and gatherings, it can be dangerous.

It is advised by the FDA to inspect any candy you or a child has before consuming it. According to the FDA, do not accept any treats that are not commercially wrapped or have signs of tampering, such as unusual appearance, discoloration, tiny pinholes or tears in wrappers.

Enjoy the festivities safely – spooky season is officially upon us, Texans.
