Since starting their 2026 season, the Texans’ baseball team has been taking home mostly wins thanks to the many passionate players on the team, one of whom being Tarleton State University’s Sergio Guerra. On Feb. 17, he was recognized by the Western Athletic Conference as Player of the Week and was also named Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week.
“Guerra’s exceptional start to the season earned national recognition… solidifying his place among the top catchers in college baseball,” Tarleton Athletics said in a release about the honors.
When it comes to how he stays strong on the field, Guerra continues to improve from the hard work and dedication he puts in by always showing up and staying consistent.
“Really, nothing has changed over the last two years for me. I just show up every day, get my work in, make sure I’m going about my business professionally every day and doing everything I need to do to be prepared on the field,” Guerra said.
He and his teammates show up an hour before practice to hone their skills and coordination as a team. Guerra spends roughly half of the day dedicated to baseball in one way or another, but he makes a point to spend the other half with his off-field relationships.
When it comes to those relationships, he credits his family for the drive and success he has been seeing.
“A big motivator for me is my family—and God obviously—but my family, without them I wouldn’t be here, so I just try to show up every day and do everything I can for them and all my buddies back home, because I know a lot of people would kill to be in my shoes,” Guerra said.
“I would say my biggest role models are my parents. I hope to be half the people they are one day. They’re great, they gave me everything I’ve ever needed to be in this situation.”
Typically, senior athletes gearing up to graduate would be spending time thinking about what they will be doing after graduation, like preparing for the professional ranks, but Guerra tries not to worry about that just yet and prefers to stay grounded in the games he is working toward.
“In-season, I’m not really one to worry about scouts and all that. I just try to worry about what’s going on under my feet. I worry about the games and worry about my guys and stuff, so I try to worry about that other stuff after season,” Guerra said.
He wants to keep a steady head and humble mind so he can play baseball at the highest level he can. Part of his process is to keep his head in the game and stay focused.
“Really and truly, it’s just staying mentally strong. Baseball is a game of ups and downs, and you just have to understand that you’re going to fail in baseball. You’re gonna fail a lot, and you just gotta be able to keep a steady mind and overcome all that stuff,” Guerra said.
As strong as one player can be, they need a team that can play to the same level, and the Texans can do just that.
“We all have each other’s back, and we all pick each other up when we’re down and we’re always going to be there for each other. That’s kind of our motto,” Guerra said.
His passion for the game runs deep, as it was part of his world growing up. He was able to watch his father play professional baseball and learn from him.
“Baseball has just been in my life since I was three, and I haven’t stopped playing since,” Guerra said.
When it comes to the future, professional baseball may be on the horizon for Guerra, but right now his focus remains on the present. With a steady mindset and a passion for what he does, Guerra will continue to work hard for the sport that he loves so dearly.
