As the Greek intramural basketball season commences at Tarleton State University, sororities and fraternities get ready for competition on the court.
Many brothers and sisters have the chance to play a sport they love while being able to enjoy a more flexible team without committing to year-round training, mandatory practices and demanding time commitments that collegiate basketball requires.
According to Texas A&M Recreation Sports, intramural sports “gives you the luxury of participating in one or more sports with little time commitment, less formality and more fun.”
Tarleton intramurals have seven different categories, which include Women’s, Men’s, CoRec, Greek Women’s, Greek Men’s, Greek CoRec and Residence Life.
During the spring basketball season, all of these divisions bring something to intramurals, but Greek intramurals adds an extra touch of spirit, rivalry and unity within Tarleton's sororities and fraternities.
For many students, Greek intramural basketball offers more than just a chance to play. It gives them the opportunity to play alongside their brothers and sisters and a place to fit in.
“[Greek intramural basketball] brings a lot of different people to life in my sorority,” Brianne Helton, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and the sorority’s intramural basketball team, said.
“It adds another element to sororities for girls that don't really see themselves as the typical sorority girl. It allows them to express themselves in that way.”
Greek intramural basketball also gives sorority and fraternity members a sense of community within their chapters.
“Last season, when we played in the semi-final game, we had more than half of our chapter show up to root for us,” Wyatt Towler, a member of FarmHouse Fraternity and the fraternity’s intramural basketball team, said. "It brings together a sense of camaraderie.”
On game nights, the Tarleton Recreation Center is filled with Greek Life members ready to support their brothers and sisters. The bleachers are quickly filled, spirits are running at an all-time high and the rivalry between teams brings intensity to the atmosphere.
“While the atmosphere of the games depends on who we’re playing and at what point in the game we're in, the atmosphere is lively,” Towler said. “If it's more of a competitive game, you'll have the fans really getting into it.”
Players say that the high-energy atmosphere does more than just excite the crowd.
“It brings everyone together because you're rooting for your sisters.” Helton said, "You get the chance to watch them thrive even if they're not necessarily winning.”
While the games are rooted in fun, competition between chapters can quickly intensify. Friendly rivalries and chapter pride often turn matchups into heated showdowns. These types of games allow chapter members to grow closer.
Intense moments on the court often create shared experiences that players can relate to, building deeper connections and a sense of unity.
While it's obvious that Greek intramural basketball will bring chapter members together, it also unites sororities and fraternities.
Greek CoRec is a category of intramurals that combines both sorority and fraternity members on one team.
Instead of competing against one another in traditional single gender teams, they now have to come together as one team in order to work together and dominate on the court.
“When a sorority and a fraternity play together, they're playing as one team. They're not going against each other,” Jillian Cope, the current spirit chair for Phi Mu, said. "That brings in Greek unity because of the togetherness mindset.”
Traditional basketball teams naturally bring competition, but CoRec teams highlight the connections made through the unity that Cope speaks about.
Greek intramural basketball, whether competing against another chapter or playing CoRec, creates a shared connection for Tarleton’s fraternities and sororities.
“I think it's all in good fun, too. Let's go through this experience with everyone and gain new relationships so we can support our new friends in other things outside of a basketball game,” Cope said.
As the new season tips off, intramural basketball will be more than just a scoreboard.
It will bring competition, camaraderie and connection—continuing to prove that the strongest bonds can be built on the court.
